Project funding success! Bringing Biodiversity Back
CHRL is continuing its commitment to restoring and protecting our region’s natural environment through an exciting initiative: Bringing Biodiversity Back – Creating More Resilient Landscapes. Funded through the City of Coffs Harbour 2026-27 Environmental Levy small grants program, this project focuses on strengthening the health of our local ecosystems while supporting the incredible work of our Landcare volunteers across the region. By combining practical, on-ground actions with community-driven solutions, the initiative delivers real and lasting environmental benefits.
A key part of the project is targeted weed control in unmanaged buffer zones surrounding priority Landcare sites. These buffer areas, often located on Council and NSW National Parks land, can act as breeding grounds for invasive weeds that spread into restored areas. By strategically treating these buffer zones, CHRL is reducing reinfestation, protecting native vegetation, and safeguarding the hard work of our volunteers. This broader, landscape-scale approach strengthens the resilience of entire ecosystems, not just individual sites.
Equally important, the project also continues support of CHRL’s Community Nursery, including funding of a part-time Nursery Coordinator. The Coordinator plays a vital role in guiding volunteers, maintaining safe and efficient nursery operations, and producing high-quality, locally sourced native plants, which are essential for restoration efforts across the region. The plants are supplied to our Landcare sites, community projects, and local residents looking to enhance biodiversity in their own backyards and properties. With expert advice on species selection, the nursery ensures that the right plants are matched to the right locations, improving survival rates and supporting healthier ecosystems over the long term.
Together, these efforts are making a meaningful difference. By reducing weed pressure, improving habitat condition, and building community knowledge and capacity, Bringing Biodiversity Back is helping to create more resilient landscapes across the Coffs Harbour region.
Environmental Levy Grants Program
Under the Program, grants are available to community organisations for projects starting from 1 July each financial year.
The objectives of the Environmental Levy Grants Program are to ensure that the allocation of Environmental Levy funds support the achievement of the MyCoffs Community Strategic Plan – A natural environment sustained for the future.
