What does the Treasurer do?

The Treasurer is a key member of the Committee, helping ensure Coffs Landcare remains financially strong, transparent and sustainable. While our staff manage the day-to-day financial transactions, record keeping and budget administration, the Treasurer provides oversight, guidance and strategic financial leadership.

Key responsibilities include:

• Monitoring the organisation’s financial health and reporting to the Committee.
• Comparing actual financial performance against the budget so the Committee can make informed decisions.
• Helping develop, monitor and review annual budgets in partnership with staff, the Chair and other Committee members.
• Ensuring appropriate financial policies, procedures and controls are in place.
• Advising the Committee on financial strategy, risks and opportunities.
• Supporting fundraising initiatives and thinking creatively about generating new sources of income.
• Helping ensure compliance with relevant tax and financial obligations.
• Overseeing financial reporting processes and annual reviews.

The Treasurer helps the Committee understand:

• What the organisation owns.
• How much cash is available.
• Where income comes from.
• How funds are being spent.
• Any debts, liabilities or financial risks that need attention.

Do I need to be an accountant?

Not at all.

A basic understanding of accounting is helpful, but many aspects of not-for-profit accounting are simply about understanding money coming in and money going out. What’s most important is having an interest in financial stewardship, a willingness to learn, and the ability to look at information critically and ask good questions.

We’re looking for someone who can:

• Think strategically and contribute to long-term planning.
• Review financial information and identify trends or risks.
• Work collaboratively with staff and fellow Committee members.
• Bring ideas and creativity to fundraising and financial sustainability.
• Help ensure good governance and accountability.

What’s the time commitment?

The Committee’s executive meetings are held monthly and typically run for around two hours. You’ll also need some time before each meeting to review financial reports and meeting papers so you can actively contribute to discussions and decision-making.

Beyond meetings, there is flexibility to be involved at a level that suits you. There are also opportunities to get involved in the events, activities and community projects run by Coffs Harbour Regional Landcare (CHRL), making the role a great way to connect with like-minded people who care about our local environment.
