Weed Alert for Sticky nightshade (Solanum sisymbriifolium ) following the discovery by  biosecurity staff for the City of Coffs Harbour (CoCH) of a few young plants in the Coffs Harbour area.

This weed has become a major problem in Central West NSW and was discussed at the last Regional weed committee meeting as something to keep an eye out for because a few LGA’s on the North Coast have  found plants in recent months. Clarence biosecurity staff have also located plants in recent weeks on their major roads.

It is a very distinctive solanum with extremely lobed leaves, distinctive flower and bright red fruit. It would appreciated if everyone could help keep an eye out for this plant and inform Andrew Hughes, Invasive Species Officer, CoCH, if you find one. At this point they believe that the plants they have found were spread by transportation and no fruiting plants have been found, however the fruit is very attractive to birds and this can spread very quickly. Sticky  nightshade is classified under the Biosecurity Act 2015 for eradication and notify local control authority if found.
